ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Your review session will take place this evening, Monday, Dec. 7 at 7:30pm in Harold Frank Hall 1104.  For those of you unfamiliar with HFH, itÕs just down the walkway from Broida Hall going away from the library.

Your final exam is this Tuesday, December 8 at 8am in Broida 1610.  Bring a large scantron form, a pencil/eraser, and a calculator.  The exam will be closed notes, closed book.

The answers to problem one on HW10 are the following: a) 30,000 km/s, b) 428 Mpc, c) 200,000 ly, d) 2e36 W.

The practice final solutions are posted.

A practice final has been posted.  We will post solutions by the end of the week.  Professor Antonucci will be holding a review session to cover the material on the practice midterm.  Keep any eye on the website for the data and time.

If you were unable to find a ride to any of the extra credit observing nights, or you want to make up for not being able to attend the mandatory observation on the roof of Broida, you can still receive extra credit by making your own star chart.  On a clear night, MAKE YOUR OWN MAP OF THE HEAVENS.  You can use starry night or the tables in the back of your book to assist you, but weÕd like you to create your own by getting to know the night sky.  DO NOT COPY THE CHARTS IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK!!  On your map, please include the cardinal directions, the ecliptic, zenith, north celestial pole, any constellations you can make out, bright stars, phase of the Moon, etc.  Also include the date and time you made the sketch.  Be creative...the more detail the better.  If a star appears red, color it red.  If you can put a grid showing celestial longitude and latitude, do so (this is not an easy task because your paper is flat and the celestial sphere isnÕt), etc.    Please turn these into the homework boxes before your final exam or at the very latest, bring them with you to the exam.  No late extra credit assignments can be accepted.

For those of you who couldnÕt make the observing session last week, there will be a make up session this Wednesday evening at 7:30pm on the roof of Broida Hall.  It shouldnÕt take more than an hour.  Please dress warmly.

Our mandatory observing session will take place tonight at 8pm on the roof of Broida Hall.  If you enter the stairwell on the south side of the building, 7 flights of stairs will bring you to the roof.  Bring a flashlight if you have one and warm clothes because we will be up there a couple hours.

Assignment 9 will NOT be due!  We suggest you treat it as a real assignment, but without the pressure of turning it in.  Please consult the solutions afterwards.

Homework 8 has been posted.  So have the solutions to homework 7.

Keep and eye on the website because we will have our observing session very soon.

Solutions to Assignment 6 have been posted.  Assignment 7 is posted and will be due Friday, Nov. 13.

Wednesday, Nov. 11 is a holiday and neither class nor discussion sections will take place.  If you have a Wednesday section, youÕre welcome to attend any of the other sections.  If you canÕt make it, come to office hours for help.

Many students have been unable to find their returned assignments.  Please check in the boxes above and below your name, as well as in the box corresponding to your first name in case it was put there.  After doing that, email the TAs and weÕll let you know if it was processed and give you your score.

Your midterms scores were returned in class on Friday, Nov. 6.  If you didnÕt pick up your score sheet, see Professor Antonucci after class on Monday or in his office during office hours.  The average score on the exam was 21/29 (one question was removed due to poor wording).

In order to clean up a little, we have posted all the old announcements here.
