Calendar Terminology

Use the links to the left to view the upcoming workout schedules. The following comments will hopefully demistify some of the terminology used throughout the calendar.

Easy Runs

Usually falling on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, these runs are supposed to be easy milage days. You should be able to talk freely throughout the run even though you're getting in a good workout.

Steady State Runs

Usually falling on Thursdays and Saturdays, these runs are the body of endurance training. Though you'll be able to chat during the beginning of the run, the goal is to maintain a continuous effort. You should try to leave most of what you have in you out on the trails.

Tempo Runs

These are usually shorter runs that are definitely on the fast side. Although the run should not feel like you race pace, these runs should be a continuous long open stride. There shouldn't be much room for talking on these run days.

Fartlek

German for "speed play," these runs will in general be long easy runs with interspersed periods of hightened effort. The goal is to adapt to various running tempos while training the body to surge during a competition.

Strides

Usually completed after a shorter run, these 4 to 6 times 100m dashes with ample rest in between will help to loosen up the legs and open up the stride.

Repeats and Intervals

Tuesday speed workouts will usually involve 3-5 miles of repeats or intervals. Varying in length from 1/2 to 3/2 miles, these almost-race-pace runs will train the body for race style speed and endurance.

In/Out

A single continuous run of about 3 miles broken up into many smaller sections of faster and slower running. These are similar to fartleks but tend to be more group oriented and often occur on Tuesdays.
