Transferring files to the Physics web server

Important: All usernames and passwords refer to accounts on the web server web.physics.ucsb.edu

You will need to work on your web pages on a system that you normally access, such as your laptop or desktop, and then transfer them to our web server, web.physics.ucsb.edu, to make them available on the internet.

Resources on Creating Web Pages

• Roger Freedman has some excellent instructions for using Netscape Composer for creating and publishing web pages. As of this writing, you will need a separate program to publish using SCP or SFTP because Netscape Composer does not support these secure protocols. Also, note that the upload host is web.physics.ucsb.edu for the transfer, not www.physics.ucsb.edu.
  
• Macromedia's Dreamweaver provides a graphical front-end to HTML in both Macintosh and Windows versions. It also supports secure publishing directly from the program. Software and licensing can be obtained through Software Depot. The UCSB Bookstore also provides discount pricing on boxed versions.

How to Upload Files

• NOTE: FTP (a clear text protocol) has been DISCONTINUED. Please use the secure alternatives, SFTP or SCP. If you can not connect to the web server, please contact PCS to determine if your password and login shell need to be reset to support secure file transfer with sftp or scp.

  sftp web.physics.ucsb.edu

  Type "pwd" to see what directory you are in. In most cases, you will be in /home/username/public_html which is the top level directory for web pages. However if you are part of a web group, then you will be in /home/username. In that case you will need to either "cd public_html" to get to your personal web space, or "cd ~groupname/public_html" to get to your group's web space.

  Once you are in the correct public_html directory use the "put" command to deposit your web page on the server. Your top level page should be called index.html so that people can access it simply by requesting www.physics.ucsb.edu/~username or www.physics.ucsb.edu/~groupname

• Instructions for using sftp on Windows:

  Install client software that can transfer files using sftp or scp such as WinSCP.
  Please note: If you use WinSCP, you must use SFTP because their version of SCP is NOT compatible with our server.
