How to obtain a Mathematica License - UCSB Physics Department


1) Use our license server.  This is the preferred method if you have a desktop at UCSB.

IMPORTANT:  The license server will NOT work when you are away from UCSB.

  • After a new installation or when your current license is about to expire, you will receive a pop-up window asking for a password.
  • 1)  Select the option for "Network License."
    2)  Enter the license server name: mathematica.physics.ucsb.edu
    3)  Click OK
    4)  You can now use mathematica.


    2) Request a password from the Wolfram registration site.  This is the preferred method for laptops and home users.


    Important: Obtain the activation code first. Click here from within Broida for information about obtaining an activation code.
    1)    Generate a MathID from your local installation.
    1)    Start Mathematica.
    2)    On the "Personalize Mathematica" pop-up window, select "Single Machine."
    3)    Enter the following:
      • Name:  <Enter your name>
      • Organization:  UCSB Physics
      • License Number:  (Use the one from Software Depot)
    4)    Click OK
    2)    On the next window you will see a MathID.  You need to generate a password for this MathID.
    3)    The next page will be the Product Registration page, enter the following:
            1)    Select the version you are using.
            2)    Enter your MathID and hostname.         3)    Scroll to the bottom and click the Continue button.
    4)    On the Mathematica Site Registration page, enter all of this information correctly.
           1)    Title, First name, Last name:  Enter your personal information
           2)    Organization:  UCSB
           3)    Department:  Physics
           4)    Lab or Facility:  Enter your PI's name
           5)    Email address:  Enter your email address  (the password will be sent to this address)
           6)    Phone:  Enter your work phone number
           7)    Phone type:  Work
           8)    Verify the information and click Continue.
    5)    Check your email for a message from Wolfram. The password will be sent to the email address you provded on the registration form.

    6)    Go back to Mathematica and enter the password. You can copy and paste it from the email message.

    7)    Click OK.

    8)    You can now use Mathematica.
