Recommended Pine Configuration

Configuring Pine as a secure IMAP client under UNIX/Linux

Sending mail

You must also make sure to set the proper SMTP server for sending mail. This will send your mail through our server via an encrypted connection.

 [smtp-server]    =    smtp.physics.ucsb.edu:587/tls

Mail forwarding from your local machine

You must also make sure that the file ~/.forward forwards your mail from your local machine to our IMAP server. To do this, create the file ~/.forward with the following line:

username@physics.ucsb.edu

How to save e-mail and attachments locally:

View the e-mail you would like to save locally. Select View (V), which will first list the message of the e-mail, and then all attachments. Use the up and down arrow keys to navigate, and save (S) to write to your local hard drive. Use (ctrl-t) to browse the destination directory.

Composing mail with alternate editors

From the Main Menu, select Setup (S) and then Config (C). Set (X) the following options: Now, everytime you compose a message, Pine will prompt you for "Which alternate editor?" The default will still be pico, but you can enter vi, emacs, etc.
