Using Anonymous FTP

Physics Computing Services provides an FTP server, ftp://ftp.physics.ucsb.edu, that can be used to easily share large files with colleagues across the globe. Your files will be publicly-accessible to anyone with access to an FTP client or web browser that supports the FTP protocol.

The FTP service available is anonymous, which only requires an email address to be entered for the password. Because of the public nature of anonymous FTP service, we have implemented a "Drop Box" facility so that our server does not become an unwilling third-party in illegal software distribution.

  • The /pub directory is readable but not writable (drop box). Files here are to be downloaded.
  • The /upload directory is writable, but not readable. This is the area to upload files.

If you are a UCSB Physics user who wishes to make a file available to a colleague:

  • Use your FTP client to connect via FTP to ftp://ftp.physics.ucsb.edu with username: anonymous and password: your email address
  • Navigate into the /upload directory. PUT your file in that directory.
  • Send an email to ftp-manager@physics.ucsb.edu telling us that you have uploaded a file in /upload that you would like moved to the /pub directory for anonymous download. Please give us the file name, and an "end date" so that we know when to remove your file from the server.

If you are a colleage of a UCSB Physics user who wishes to download a file made available:

  • Use your FTP client to connect via FTP to ftp://ftp.physics.ucsb.edu with username: anonymous and password: your email address
  • Navigate into the /pub directory. GET your file from that directory.
