Accessing the Physics Guest Network

The UCSB Physics Guest Network is an isolated network with limited internet access available in Broida Hall, PSB South, Trailers 939 and 942. This network is intended for use by temporary guests and visitors of the Physics Department, and other authorized temporary hosts for purposes of obtaining patches and updates for computer software.

To connect to the Guest Network, a guest plugs in to a designated visitor port (see a Faculty Assistant to locate a visitor port) and ensures that the computer is using DHCP to obtain its IP address and DNS servers automatically. Alternatively, to connect to the Guest Network over a wireless connection, read the instructions here.

The guest should then open a web browser, which should bring up a registration page (if not, go to http://10.111.17.5). Two choices are available: Temporary visitors (for seven days or less) and Permanent visitors (for more than seven days). After the guest submits the appropriate registration information, he/she will need to wait one minute for the computer to be recognized as a registered host, after which the computer should have an IP address with a limited and firewalled connection to the internet.

Permanent visitors will be asked to check their machine for any needed patches, and confirm they have current antivirus software. They then contact PCS at ext 8366 (or pcs@physics.ucsb.edu) to schedule a scan of their computer over the network for known infections and vulnerabilities. Passing the scans allows the computer to be placed on the Internet without the restrictive firewall reserved for temporary visiting machines.
