Physics Department
Phone Service Definitions
The Physics Department has decided to provide, internally,
a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system for its
members to contain costs. The UCSB campus continues to provide
analog phone service to much of the building, also.
When connecting a new phone instrument, the type of service
needed will be based on the existing service (if any) and the
use of the room, based on the department policies.
- As we transition from the old analog system, we anticipate
most of the requests will be to transfer an existing analog
phone number to the new digital VoIP system. We will work
with you to install a new instrument, confirm its operation,
etc, before removing and cancelling the old analog phone service.
- For a new phone, in a new location, or for a new individual,
the obvious choice is a new phone number. Providing a new
phone number, however, is based on
department policies.
If you provide an extramural account number, a new phone
number is your choice, but if the department pays, it will
be based on policy.
- This highlights the choice of an internal extension.
These instruments will have an internal number, and can
contact other internal VoIP phones, only.
This would be a rare, special situation.
- The last choice indicated provides for an internal
extension, but also allows access to calls to/from
outside the VoIP system using a number already on the
VoIP system. This might be another extension of an
existing number. It might also be used for an extension
served by a phone tree.
