Office Hours:
Thursdays, 2:30-4:00pm, in KITP (Kohn Hall), Room 2315
Subject
This course is the second quarter of condensed matter physics. It
continues to develop the quantum theory of matter, focusing on more
advanced topics. We will discuss graphene, topological insulators,
superfluidity and superconductivity, magnetism, and other subjects as
time permits
There will be no required text for this course, but we will use last
quarter's text from 123A, The Oxford Solid State Basics by
Steve Simon, sometimes for reference.
Notes on all lectures will be provided in pdf form (see syllabus
below).
Other References:
Prerequisites:
- Physics 115A: elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics is
essential.
- Physics 123A: we will build on the material from the previous
quarter.

Grading:
Formula:
- homework: 30%: Due by 4pm to Amanda Jones in Kohn Hall 1220, or
email an electronic copy directly to Prof. Balents. Credit
for homework will be entirely based on effort - i.e. on-time
completion.
- mid-term: 30%
- final: 40%
