ANNOUNCEMENTS

1/11: Here are the Final Exam Solutions: Final Exam Solutions.

12/1: The final exam is cumulative, about 1/3 of the problems will be from material covered before the midterm. The final will consist of 25 multiple choice questions. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING A PINK SCANTRON FORM, A CALCULATOR, AND YOUR SCHOOL ID. A set of practice problems has been posted on Mastering Physics. A list of formulas will be provided with the test.

12/8: Here is the equation sheet for the final exam: Equation sheet. If you would like, you can print this sheet out and write more formulas on it to bring to the test. One page only!

12/6: Here are the Midterm Solutions: Midterm Solutions.

12/1: Here are the HW 10 Solutions: HW 10 Solutions. NOTE: There is an error on the "Resistance and Wire Length" problem. The final answer should read (1/n^2)*R_long.

12/1: Here are the HW 9 Solutions: HW 9 Solutions.

11/18: Here are the HW 8 Solutions: HW 8 Solutions.

11/18: Here are the HW 7 Solutions: HW 7 Solutions.

11/18: Here are the HW 6 Solutions: HW 6 Solutions.

11/18: As requested, here is a copy of the midterm, to help you study for the final exam: midterm.

11/11: Apparently, iclicker deleted their database this past summer and as a result many of you are not registered. Please re-register here: iclicker website. Note that your participation data for this class is safe. Next week we will finalize iclicker registration for students who can't find their numbers.

11/2: A copy of the midterm equation sheet can be found here: Equation sheet

11/1: The solutions for HW 5 can be found here: HW 5 Solutions

10/26: The midterm will cover material up to and including HW 5. It will consist of between 12 and 14 multiple choice questions. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING A PINK SCANTRON FORM, A CALCULATOR, AND YOUR SCHOOL ID. A set of practice problems has been posted on Mastering Physics. A list of formulas will be provided with the test.

10/26: The solutions for HW 4 can be found here: HW 4 Solutions

10/15: The midterm will be on Nov. 5th, rather than Oct. 29th, to accomodate scheduling conflicts. Tell your friends!

10/19: The solutions for HW 3 can be found here: HW 3 Solutions

10/15: iClicker Registration: Please register your iClicker at www.iclicker.com if you have not done so already. If you can't find your iClicker number, keep bringing it to class as usual. On Thursday, October 22nd in class (or after) we will attempt to complete the registration.

10/8: Lead TA: The Lead TA for the course will be Daniel Malinow (dmalinow@physics.ucsb.edu). He is the person who can help most quickly with issues regarding Mastering Physics, TA/Lab issues, iClickers, etc.

10/12: The solutions for HW 2 can be found here: HW 2 Solutions

10/8: iClicker points policy: If you receive 90% of the possible iClicker points, you will be given full credit for the iClicker part of your grade. This allows for a couple absences or times where you forget to bring your iClicker.

10/7: The solutions for HW 1 can be found here: HW 1 Solutions

9/29: NOTE: This is the website for the TR 11:00-12:15 lecture of Physics 3. The MWF 1:00 lecture's website can be found here: MWF website

9/29: If you accidentally signed up on Mastering Physics for the MWF lecture, you need to email Professor Guruswamy to drop you from her course before you can join the correct one.

Mastering Physics:

NOTE: If you don't have a Mastering Physics account or you don't have a perm number, see me to discuss setting one up.

For everyone else (most of you):

You will need to “enroll” in your Mastering Physics course. Even though you're registered with Mastering Physics, you'll need to enroll for the course separately.
• Go to www.masteringphysics.com and select the textbook for your course.
• Under "Established User," enter the login name and password you created and click Log In.
• When prompted, enter your Course ID: MPFOLSOM3, and for Student ID, use your Perm Number.

To access your course from now on, simply go to www.masteringphysics.com, click on your textbook, and enter your login name and password.

iClickers:

We will be using iClickers this quarter as you have done in Physics 1-2. Your iClicker points will be based purely on participation. You must register your iClickers if you have not done so already: iClicker Website

Course Outline:

Physics 3 is a continuation of Physics 1-2. This quarter we will cover oscillations and waves, the electric field, Gauss' Law, and DC circuits. The lectures will supplement the textbook; we will cover some sections in a different order and introduce extra examples. The material covered in lecture will be emphasized on exams over material covered in the textbook.

Grading:

Grades will be based on participation, homeworks, and 2 exams:

iClicker Participation: 5%
Homework: 30%
Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 45%

The following chart shows the minimum letter grade you will receive if you earn a given percentage of the points for the class:

Exams:

If you inform me before the mid-term that you cannot take it, you will be excused and your grade will be based on the rest of the course. If you do not inform me beforehand you will receive a 0.

If you inform me before the final that you cannot or will not take it, you will be excused and given an incomplete. The incomplete can be completed by taking the final when Physics 3 is next offered, during the academic year or summer if you are able. The final will be melded with your work this quarter and your incomplete transformed into a grade. If you do not take the makeup final the incomplete reverts to an F. If you do not inform me beforehand you will receive an F.
