Range of Courses / Duties for TA's
There is a large spectrum of courses available to TA in the Physics Department. The duties your job will entail
and people you will interact with depend strongly on which course you are TA-ing. The level of subject matter
involved can range from algebra only (not even trigonometry in some cases!) up to graduate level quantum
mechanics and beyond. The number of students in your class can range from 6 to 300. The students in your
class can be physics graduate students or freshman sociology majors.
One of the largest factors in making the TA-ing experience enjoyable and rewarding is choosing the right
class . Some of you will be more comfortable with lots of social contact and training yourself to teach
large lecture classes in the future (i.e. dealing with "the general population"). Some of you will be more
comfortable dealing with a small number of students and more stimulating physics content. During the
TA training course this quarter, you should take the opportunity to talk to your fellow TA's about their
experiences so that you can TA the best class for you in the future.
Here is a table that briefly outlines what to expect from some of the available classes:
Keep in mind some duties may vary quarter to quarter depending on professor, class size, etc.
