A coil of wire wrapped around the bottom half of an iron rod is connected through a momentary switch to an AC current. Depress the switch, then place the loop of wire over the rod, causing the bulb to light. Holding the coil of wire in any other position about the Elihu Thompson coil will not light the bulb.
