Recipe for installing Windows 2000/XP

I. Hardware, Operating System, and Drivers

1. Physical inspection

Remove dust.
Check CPU fan.
Clean monitor and keyboard

2. Inventory parts

Become oriented with system components.
Review documentation for hardware. If none, go to the makers’ web page and download appropriate drivers.

3. BIOS

Check BIOS version and update if possible.
Have CD-ROM be first in boot sequence followed by floppy drive.
Disable Power Management
Enable AC Power Loss Restart

4. Win 2000 install or Windows XP Professional Install

Boot using the windows 2000 professional CD or the XP professional CD
If installation of a SCSI or other IDE adapter driver is required, press F3 after it boots to CD.
Make a partition for the OS to be 2GB less than the total space on drive. This 2GB of undefined space will be used as a swap space later.
Use NTFS for the file system.

5. Copy Windows 2000 CD-ROM onto HD, if using Windows XP Professional you don’t have to do this.

Move d:\i386\ to c:\winnt\cdrom\

6. Install hardware drivers not auto detected by install.

7. Setup SWAP partition

· Run computer management by clicking start>run> type in: compmgmt.msc /s

· Click Disk Management and highlight unpartitioned space in graphic. Right click>new partition. Make the partition 2000 MB and FAT. Choose quick format. Choose the drive letter as Z:

· After swap partition is made, click my computer, click properties, click advanced>performance>change. Set a swap on the C drive the size of the RAM installed in the system. Set Z: swap file as 5 MB less than the maximum size. Click apply and restart.

7. After verifying that all the devices are functioning, run the service pack and all updates except for .NET from the windows update website.

II Software

(Most of the necessary software is available at \\camaro\Applications)

1. Install Office XP from Camaro (\\camaro\applications\ms office xp)

Do a complete install. Put all office icons in a separate folder in programs folder called Microsoft Office XP.

2. Install Netscape Communicator 4.79 (\\camaro\applications\netscape)

Clear personal toolbar in Bookmarks and add link to PCS www.physics.ucsb.edu/~pcs/

3. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 unless the machine needs the full version which needs to have a license (\\camaro\applications\utils\acrobat reader)

4. Install Corporate Time 6 (\\camaro\applications\util\corporate time)

5. Install Diskeeper 7 (\\camaro\applications\diskeeper 7)

6. Install Norton Antivirus 8.1 (\\camaro\applications\norton antivirus)

7. Install a minimum install of Quicktime 6 (\\camaro\applications\utils\quicktime6)

8. Install realone player (\\camaro\applications\utils\realone player)

9. Install retrospect client (\\camaro\applications\utils\retrospect\client\installer) Password: PCSb4r

10. Install Securecrt (\\camaro\applications\utils\securecrt\version 4) Run the license file and click unzip after install.

11. Install Stuffit (\\camaro\applications\utils\stuffit) Choose option to place stuffit expander and drag it on desktop. Move those shortcuts to the Stuffit folder on the start menu.

12. Install VNC (\\camaro\applications\utils\VNC ver 3.3.7) Choose run as a service and enter the default password as the admin password for windows 2000.

13. Install GSview 4.1 Ghostscript 7 from (\\camaro\applications\utils\ghostview\gs 4.1)

Type in path C:\apps\gstools and let the program make the directory

14. Install WS_FTP Pro 6.5 (\\camaro\applications\utils\wsftp_6.51\install)

After restart Install the patch (\\camaro\applications\ws_ftp\patch for 6.51)

(Optional Software depending on the purpose of the machine)

Install Miktek from \\camaro\applications\tex\miktex and then an editor such as \\camaro\applications\utils\editors for windows\winedt\

Additional Customizations

1. Customize Desktop and Start Menu

Create "Applications" folder under \documents and settings\all users\start menu\. Put shortcuts to most used apps inside.
Move all directories and shortcuts under admins profile (\documents and settings\admin\start menu) to all users (\documents and settings\all users\start menu\)
Delete shortcuts on desktop.
Change permissions in Winnt/ and Program Files/ to allow everyone access, include sub-directories. All do this to the following folder \documents and settings\all users\

2. Set Internet Explorer options to save only 1MB of cached files.

3. Add Printer Drivers - Find out location for computer then install appropriate drivers. Install both PS and PCL if the printer is capable of both and name printer accordingly.

4. Add to network

(Use the New User Script to configure user account).
