Physics Computing Services

Broida Hall Power Outage planned for Saturday-Sunday, December 17 and 18, 2011

In order to protect computer systems located in the office areas of Broida Hall, Physics Computing Services (PCS) will be shutting down computer systems on Friday afternoon.

Broida Hall will be without power this Saturday and Sunday. (See the message from Mike Deal, below for further information.)

Physics Computing Services will begin shutting down computer systems/printers/UPSes located in the office areas of Broida Hall beginning at 2:00pm on Friday.

Unless you

your computer systems and electronics will be turned off before 5:00pm on Friday.

PCS is not available after 5:00pm, nor are they available Saturday to shut your systems off. Please do not request "turn my system off last", as they will work through the floors in order, and do not have the time to backtrack. PCS will not be entering labs to shutdown systems. Please have your research staff and graduate students prepare your labs for the power outage.

CAMPUS NETWORK WILL BE UP
Broida Hall, PSB South, and Trailers 939, 937 and 942 are expected to be affected by this outage. Network connections to Broida should remain up. In additional, all network connections within Broida are on UPSes, and are connected to the building generator. The Broida network should remain up. The Physics phone system should remain up. Central Physics servers (i.e. e-mail, VPN, shell servers) should remain up.

EARLY SATURDAY WORKERS NEED TO SHUT DOWN THEIR SYSTEMS
If you plan to work with your systems on Saturday, the 17th, be sure to turn off the computer, printers, monitors and all the UPS units before you leave. Repeated deep-cycling of UPS batteries shortens their life. Only critical systems plugged into the designated standby (generator) power outlets should remain on.

TURNING MACHINES BACK ON
If you wish to have PCS restart your systems on Monday morning, send an e-mail to pcs@physics.ucsb.edu and they will attempt to restart your computer systems.

MIKE DEAL's MESSAGE
ELECTRICAL OUTAGE (Electrical meter upgrade) scheduled for December 17 and 18. All electrical service will be out for most of the weekend.

The outage will start at 7:00am on Saturday and will continue until work is completed on Sunday. Most building systems will be affected - There will be no supply/exhaust air (air conditioning/heating), laser/equipment cooling water, compressed air, lighting and electrical receptacles. One elevator will remain operational. Only laboratory emergency circuits, emergency exit lighting and fume hood exhaust will be powered by the emergency generator. Basically, the building(s) will be very uninviting and you will want to avoid coming in this weekend.

Areas affected: Broida, PSB-South, T937, T939, & T942

Note:
-All circuits (regular and emergency) in PSB-South will remain on for the duration of the outage [but] there will be power interruptions at the start and shutdown of the generator. I will speak separately with PSB-South occupants about specific impacts to other building systems.
-Please prepare for the outage by checking your battery backup units. Test and replace any bad batteries well before the scheduled outage.

WATER OUTAGE - is scheduled for 4 hours on Saturday, December 17. (same weekend) There will be no industrial, domestic, or DI water in PSB-South and Broida.

Areas affected: Broida & PSB-South
Note: This will affect environmental controls in PSB-South laboratories (Awschalom)
