Configuring Windows XP
for the Physics Wireless Network

  1. Configure your wireless card to use DHCP to obtain TCP/IP network settings.
  2. Fill out the IP Address Request Form for your wireless card.
Special items to note on the form in the Comments section:
    1. Specify that you are using a wireless card. Be sure you are providing the MAC address of the wireless card and not the ethernet interface. Here is information on how to find your MAC address.
    2. Specify a username/password combination for use with wireless. If you are already using the Physics dial-up modems, you will use this username/password.
    3. Specify the name of your machine if it has already been on the Physics network. If your machine has never been on the Physics network, we will need to scan your machine for security vulnerabilities behind our firewall in PCS. (HEP users can disregard this step, as you will be connected to the HEP network automatically based on your username and password.)

  3. Ensure that you have installedthe Wireless Update Rollout Package for Win XP from Microsoft (KB826942) --or-- XP Service Pack 2 and that your wireless card supports WPA (802.1x and TKIP).
  4. Ensure that you have installed the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) Update from Microsoft (KB893357).
  5. To configure the network, right click on the wireless network connection in the system tray, and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". In the list, highlight physics_test and choose choose "Change advanced settings" from the left column of the "Wireless Network Connection" window. Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab. In the "Preferred networks" section of the window, click the "Add..." button. This will begin the steps necessary to add the network.
  6. Type "physics" into the "Network name (SSID):" box.
  7. Click on the "Association" tab. Choose "WPA" from the "Network Authentication " menu. Choose "TKIP" from the "Data encryption " menu option.
  8. Click on the "Authentication" tab. Ensure that the "Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication for this network" checkbox is turned on. Choose "PEAP" from the "EAP type:" menu option. Uncheck the "Authenticate as a computer when computer information is available" checkbox.
  9. Click "Properties." Choose "Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) from the "Select Authentication Method:" menu. Click "Configure..." and uncheck "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)." Click "OK." Click "OK" to exit each of the wireless property boxes.
  10. Your computer should now be configured to authenticate to the physics wireless network.
