Policy on Missed Homework, Midterm, or Final
Prof. Carl Gwinn
Your grade for the course will be calculated from homework (30% of the
grade), two midterms (10% each) and the final (50%). All are
required.
No homework will be accepted late. If you miss a homework for a
valid reason, then the rest of your work
for the class will be upweighted so that homework has zero
weight. (So, if you
miss one homework with a valid reason, but hand in the 8 other
homeworks and get 90 on each, and and also get 90's on the two
midterms and the final: then your grade for the course will be 90,
which is usually an A-.) If you miss a homework without a valid
reason, then you'll get a zero for that homework. Each individual
homework contributes about 3.3% of your total grade.
If you miss a midterm with a valid reason, then the rest of your work
for the class will be upweighted so that the midterm has zero weight,
analogously to
the homework. Valid reasons include incapacitating illness, or death of
a close
family member (parent or sibling). They don't include other
commitments or running out of time. If you miss a midterm without
a valid excuse you will get zero for the midterm. Midterms will not be
given late or early.
If you miss the final without a valid excuse you will get a zero for
the final. If you miss the final with a valid excuse you will be
allowed to take an incomplete, and take the final the next time the
course is offered -- usually after one year. The final will not
be given late or early for any reason.
