Colloidal Crystals

In the absence of dissolved salts, sub-micron-sized polystyrene spheres suspended in water repel one another electrostatically. At a high concentrations, this repulsion forces the spheres to crystallize. The In this lab you will learn to use the phenomenon of diffraction to glimpse the microscopic structure of crystals.
