Vacuum Techniques

How do you make a vacuum?...With a vacuum pump... Yes... but how does a vacuum pump work? Why are there different types? How low can they go? and, How do you know? or, in other words, How do you measure pressure?...With a pressure gauge... Yes... but the same questions follow. In this lab you will gain experience with vacuum techniques and equipment by creating a vacuum, measuring its pressure and using an evaporator to create optically interesting thin films.
