EXAMS AND GRADING
There will be two midterms and a final exam. Your grade will be based on your homework scores, your two midterms and the final, but in a rather complicated way. In computing your straight average, I will count the homework and each of the midterms for 20% and the final for 40%. HOWEVER, this may not be what determines your grade, so read what follows carefully. I will calculate your performance in the class in a number of different ways. First, I will compute the straight average as described above. Second, I will see how you do if I ignore either your homework or one of your midterms, and count the final for 60%. Third, I will throw out the worst 2/3 of your homework/midterm work and count the final for 80%. Finally, I will just count your final for 100%. Whichever method gives you the best result is what I will use in assigning a grade. I will do all this using your performance relative to the class as a whole, i.e. on a curve. Why do it this way? I do this so that you will not become discouraged if you have a bit of a rough patch, or find things a bit overwhelming at first. As long as you UNDERSTAND the material by the time you take the final, I am happy to have your grade reflect that. So, you can skip the homework and flunk both midterms and still come out with the A+ you deserve! My advice, and in the strongest possible terms however, is this: 1. Do the homework religiously, and do it on your own. Write up and turn in as much as you can. 2. Take both midterms, even if you think you are going to do terribly on them. Remember, it can't possibly hurt you to take them, and they provide just the sort of practice needed to do well on the final.
All exams will be closed book, no calculators, no notes. Bring a blue book, which you can buy at the Bookstore.
