Required Text: Halliday and Resnick, Physics, (Wiley, Classic Edition),
volume 2
The class textbook, and a
number of other useful books, are on 2 hour reserve in Davidson Library. Please
use these resources for additional reading and problems.
Course Outline:
Physics 24 is a
continuation of Physics 23, and receiving a grade of C- or better in Physics 23
is a prerequisite for this class. You are also required to have
completed Math 5A and enroll concurrently in Physics 4L or 13BH.
In this quarter we will
cover magnetic fields, induction, inductance, ac circuits,
electromagnetic waves, geometric optics, optical instruments, and interference.
This will cover chapters 33 through 45 in the text. In the parallel lab course
(Physics 4L or 13BH), you will cover experiments emphasizing wave motion and
optics.
Grading:
Grades
are based on homework, one midterm and the final exam:
Homework: 30%
Midterm: 30%
Final exam: 40%
Homework
is due twice each week, on Tuesday and on Friday, starting week 2.
Homework must be turned into the HW box in the PLC, marked for Physics 24, by 5
pm each Tuesday and Friday, except as marked on the schedule. Homework counts
for 30% of your grade.
Midterm
will be on Wednesday, January 26 in class, will be closed book,
closed notes (formula sheet allowed), calculators allowed (no blue books
needed), and counts for 30% of your grade. No excuses other than medical
will be accepted.
Final exam
is scheduled for Monday March 14, 8-11 am. It counts for 40% of
your grade. No excuses other than medical will be accepted.
Reading:
You are expected to prepare for lecture. This involves reading the textbook. Reading is assigned for each week; do it before class!
The schedule for reading, as well as for all the
homework assignments for the quarter, appears on the next page.
Homework
sets will be assigned each week.
