Classweb System

Classweb Access Restricted

Recently, a security exploit was made public that makes classweb vulnerable to attack.  There is no good way of "fixing" classweb, and  so Physics Computing Services (PCS) has been forced to restrict access to it.   Only people attempting to access classweb from on-campus (that is, from an ip address starting with 128.111) will be allowed to do so.  Any other attempts,  including those from Cox, AOL, etc., will be rejected.  This is unfortunately a necessary security measure; the only alternative is to turn classweb off altogether.  PCS apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.  For more information, you can email  PCS at pcs@physics.ucsb.edu.

PCS has tested a solution that allows off-campus access to UCSB affiliated persons.  Using the campus Library proxy server, the classweb system can be accessed as if your computer system is on-campus.  When accessing systems, the browser pops-up a box asking for your UCSB directory username and password.    Students should use their PERM and PIN numbers.  PCS will contact the library to have classweb put on the automatic list of computers to proxy.  This will allow students to use the library's instructions in setting up their browser to use the proxy server.  Without this, PCS will have to generate additional instructions.

Further information will be posted here when available.
