This model was eliminated from use in the Santa Monica Mountains fuels data because it seriously overpredicts the rate of spread observed during historical fires through chaparral. NFFL 4 is still useful as a worst-case measuring stick of fire behavior in chaparral during Santa Ana wind events. For more information on why NFFL 4 should not be used as an accurate indicator of fire spread outside of such extreme situations go here. |
