Biography and Teaching Interests

I worked for a few years as a management information systems consultant after receiving my bachelor's (U.C. San Diego, 1987), but then I returned to the challenges and rewards of an academic career. While earning a master's (Boston University, 1993), I was introduced to the analysis of broad-scale environmental problems and began using GIS as a tool in my work. This was followed by a Ph.D. (U.C. Santa Barbara, 1999) in geography, as part of the NSF-funded Spatial Ecology Research Training Grant Program.

The courses I have taught are Physical Geography (GEOG250), Introduction to GIS (GEOG318), and Climatology (GEOG414); a course on mapping, geographic data, and spatial technologies is currently being developed (GEOG317); eventually I hope to also offer a course in advanced environmental modeling with GIS.
